Teen Whisperers – Getting beyond the words
-I’ve always been intrigued by the film The Horse Whisperer and more recently the popular T.V. series Dog Whisperer. In fact, just recently I completed an excellent book titled Monty Roberts: The Man Who Listens to Horses.
I find it fascinating that there are proven and effective ways to communicate with other species beyond using words! The book not only taught me a lot about communicating to horses but even more about communicating to people, in particular young people.
When we work with teens and we talk about effective communication, we explain how most humans communicate with each other. Here’s how it breaks down: 53% is Body Language, 40% is Tone/Feeling while just 7% are words!
The first thing we teach to groups of young people to help them become better communicators is to become better listener and better people watchers! Many times it’s important to get beyond the simple words that are being said to you by your peers, your teachers or even your parents. Become a “Teen Whisperer”. With 93% of all communications being “non-verbal”, it’s absolutely essential that you listen with your eyes, heart, and then your ears!
